Documentary: Sex and Money- A National Search for Human Worth

News Report On Documentary

A new documentary called Sex and Money- A National Search for Human Worth will be shown during a tour to raise money for sex trafficking awareness. Their contact information is on their site if you would like to hold a viewing or contribute to their efforts.

A few statistics mentioned in the trailer were:

  • 95% of the customers of prostitution are married.
  • 75% are white.

According to the website, Sex+Money: A National Search for Human Worth is a feature length documentary that follows this group of journalists as they travel in an RV for a second journey, this time across the United States, seeking to understand how the sexual exploitation of children has become the nation’s fastest growing form of organized crime and what can be done to stop it.

I cannot wait to see this film! It is great to see people informing America about what is going on in our OWN country!

Celebrate Organizations!

I have been doing quite a bit of research on Anti-Human Trafficking programs throughout the U.S. recently. I wanted to do an entry on different organizations because the effort of these groups needs to be acknowledged. I applaud each and every one of their efforts. I’m going to post their websites where you can find information on internships and methods to donate.

Eagles Wings Ministry

On Eagles Wings Ministries was founded to encourage women of all backgrounds
to overcome the pains of their past, renew their strength through God’s word, and begin to soar as they experience God’s love, forgiveness, and grace found in Jesus Christ.
On Eagles Wings Ministries provides services to women and girls who are trapped in commercial sex
ual exploitation. On our website, you can find a list of our projects and events. We are in need of volunteers to help with outreach. To learn more about our outreach and call center, please visit www.rahabshope.com
The founder Emily Fitzpatrick, has recently become a dear friend of mine. She has such and encouraging and kind personality. You can definitely tell she works to glorify the Lord. On Eagles Wings Ministry has multiple projects. One of which is Hope House.

Hope House of NC

According to their website they work to provide a place of seclusion, restoration, and healing for domestic minor sex trafficking victims (U.S. girls under 18 yrs.old). The Hope House is faith-based program. Their voluntary program is a 3 stage process that involves individual goals for personal development and celebrates accomplishments. We understand the journey to healing often takes time and each individual is unique, therefore, our program works with each individual to develop a plan that serves her best.

Emily also leads the Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Working Group. Their mission is to strengthen the ability of NC based agencies to identify and serve Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Victims (U.S. girls under the age of 18 that have been sexually exploited in our state).

To get involved please contact Emily Fitchpatrick at info@oewm.net to RSVP for their monthly conference calls the last Wednesday of each month 11 am – 12pm.

Mercy Ministries of America

According to their website, they are a free-of-charge biblically-based program that serves a diverse population of young women from various socio-economic backgrounds, aged 13-28. Many of the girls, who come to Mercy for help, are facing a combination of debilitating circumstances and have been in various treatment facilities with unsuccessful long-term results. They are committed to providing the young women they serve with the most excellent program services that allow them to recognize their self-worth and prepare them to reach their full potential. Their non-conventional approach to healing allows young women to permanently stop destructive cycles and prepares them to take hope out into their communities.

Mercy offers a six month program for girls struggling with issues such as physical and sexual abuse, sex trafficking, eating disorders, self harm, drug and alcohol addictions and unplanned pregnancies.

Please see their website for ways to get involved. They have locations all over the U.S. but even if you aren’t near their facilities, there are other ways to help.

Beauty From Ashes Ministries

This organization is located in Florida. I was really impressed with their website because they offer so much information that is so “user-friendly”. They have several videos and pictures that make it an easy yet informative resource. According to their website their mission is to prevent, rescue and restore victims of commercialized sexual exploitation and sex trafficking.

Like these other organizations, they have several ways to get involved.

According to the statistics found on their website:

  •  2 million children are prostituted in the commercial sex trade.
  • Child pornography generates $3 billion annually.
  •  The sex industry is a 97.06 billion world-wide business annually.

They also had this passage on their website:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“They are plans for good and not for disaster,
to give you a future & a hope.
In those days when you pray,
I will listen. If you look for me in earnest,
you will find me when you seek me, I will be found by you,” says the Lord,
“I will end your captivity…”

Jeremiah 29:11-14

Courtney’s House

According to their website their mission is committed to providing a safe space and loving e

nvironment – in a therapeutic and emotionally healing atmosphere – for domestic sex trafficked girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 18 years. Courtney’s House is dedicated to the mission of ending domestic sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of all children. They focus our efforts they’re providing a long-term group home and providing direct services.

I have such a high respect for this organization. I know my friend that is a survivor of sex trafficking has been receiving help from them has nothing but great things to say about them. If you are in the D.C. area they have several volunteer opportunities for ways to get involved. They also have an extensive list of other organizations if you aren’t in any of these areas.

A statistic found on their website:

Approximately 325,000 children in the United States are subjected to sexual exploitation every year.
I hope you have gained some knowledge, respect and insight to the efforts of some of the organizations in the U.S. working to restore the lives of victims to help them become survivors. It is such a serious problem….help end it

Remember Nhu and Survivor Story

Article on Remember Nhu

This article talks about the efforts of a few individuals who are working with the Lord to assist victims of human trafficking. Their organization is called Remember Nhu

According to their website; Remember Nhu is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in the United States. Remember Nhu exists to eliminate the exploitation of children in the sex trade industry all around the world. Remember Nhu was founded in 2003 by President and Founder Carl Ralston, along with his wife, Cofounder Laura Ralston.

When Nhu was 12 years old, her family was having financial issues. To provide finances, Nhu’s grandmother sold her for $300. After she was sold, Nhu was repeatedly raped and abused for three days, then returned to her family.

After this tragic event, she began to question the Lord and why she went through this and why would He would let her go through something so awful? The girl who I know was trafficked, suffers the same questions. Its hard to believe there is a reason you go through something like that. I often tell her to think of the story of Lazarus. You are put through awful things sometimes so you can be a living testimony of what God is.

Nhu’s story inspired an ohio couple to begin an international Christian non-profit. According to the article, Carl and Laura Ralston of Akron, sold their insurance business in 2004 to start Remember Nhu, a ministry that now operates six homes in five Asian nations that provide housing, food, education, and vocational training to more than 250 orphans and other children at risk of becoming victims of human trafficking.

“For every girl that is rescued, we can help 10 to 15 from becoming victims,” she said. “The girls that are rescued have been so damaged that there is a 70 percent chance they will end up back in trafficking.”

YOU CAN ALSO SPONSOR A CHILD THROUGH REMEBER  NHU FOR $60 A MONTH!

They take in children who have have no education, are orphaned, whose parents have AIDS, or single parents with financial issues.

According this article, there is a 95% rate they will be sold into trafficking!

VERY Graphic Story From a Survivor

Article about Survivor in Ohio

This article was about a girl named Theresa Flores. People have different images in their mind of the environments when people are trafficked. They may think of a third world country, the slums or even a low-income neighborhood in a big city…..In this article you will see, that is not always the case.

Flores resided in an upscale suburb in Detroit. According to the article, Flores didn’t face any abuse at home, never endured foster care, used drugs or any faced type of instability that fits the “stereotype” of a victim of trafficking. At school, Flores had a crush on a young man. One day after track practice, Flores walked outside to find the young man waiting there. He offered her a ride home, which she accepted.

One the way to her house, he turned the car around in the opposite direction. He told her he had to grab something from home. He asked her if she wanted to come in. Flores said no because her mother was waiting for her at home.

His next words to her is a VERY popular technique used to brainwash young vulnerable girls.

He said,”I like you“.

As any young girl with a crush would do, she ignored her common sense and went with him.

After she entered, he offered her soft drink which had a drug in it. Flores was then raped and taken home. Flores was so ashamed so she never told her parents. She also feared they would become disappointed in her.

Sadly, this is why many girls do not tell anyone. They are so ashamed, embarrassed and fearful of their image.

A few days later, the boy approached her and said he had pictures of her. He told her she had to work to pay for them. He threatened to distribute these pictures at her father’s work, her school and church if she didn’t comply with his orders. She agreed to work, even though she did not know what kind of “work” she would be doing.

During her “employment”, Flores would be called late at night to work. She would have to sneak out her house where the boy would pick her up. He then would take her to “beautiful private homes” where several men would have sex with her.

According to this article, they would call her while she was out babysitting to prove they could find her anywhere. They would even stalk her at her part-time job at Burger King. Like many traffickers do, they threatened to kill her family if she didn’t do as she was told. The only reason she continued was every time she had to “work”, it would be the last time and she could get the pictures back and this nightmare would be over.

One night, Flores had an awful feeling that something was not the same. She was picked up in the same car but had different people. Flores was pulled into the car and driven a long distance away that was far from the normal neighborhoods. During the car ride, she was beaten and drugged. They finally arrived at a run down smelly hotel in an inner city area.

When she arrived she saw that 20 men were waiting for her. At this time she was only 16 years old. According to this article, Flores learned they were a part of an underground organization. Flores became terrified when someone announced she was something “the boss” had arranged for them. She was then auctioned off to the highest bidder…..over….and….over…again.

After a while, she passed out and felt nauseous and sick when she woke up. She then saw the men were gone, but she was nude. She managed to find her clothing and stumbled to the 24 hour diner across the parking lot.

If efforts to help other victims, she has designed Gracehaven. This facility will help minors who are victims of sex trafficking.

According to the article it will be located in rural Ohio, it will be a place for victims to go to school, take field trips, receive specialized counseling, learn life kills, and engage in gardening and animal therapy.

I am excited to see another safehousing program open. I’m also glad to see a victim become a survivor. It’s so encouraging to see a survivor help others who are struggling to heal. This process is so gruesome for victims. Honestly, you can’t truly understand unless you go through it. It’s like you are trying to find yourself, decipher what is real and what isn’t. The hardest part is learning to trust anything and everything again.

I feel this verse is perfect for representing the healing process for survivors:

For He knows the way that I take; when He has tried me, I will come forth as gold.  -Job 23:10

I pray that if you are a victim who is reading this, you are beautiful and loved. You can get out and there are those that will help and understand you. Don’t be scared, help is here.
